Mystery Reader Mr. Joyce

We had a visit from Mr. J (Bud Joyce). He read us a book and shared his artwork with us. He is very talented.

Fry First 100 Words

Dear Families, Today I will be sending home a list of the First 100 Fry Words. We have tested your child over the First 50 Fry Words. I have indicated which words they need to work on by highlighting in yellow. Please review the words and create flashcards if needed. There are additional words that your child can work on as we are expected to read the First 100 Fry Words fluently. This means your child will read them automatically and not hesitate to decode them. Thanks for your help!

Choosing a "Good Fit Book"


CHOOSE A BOOK THAT FITS

1.  Choose a book that fits.

2.  Skim for sentences.

3.  Hold up one finger each time you find a word you don't know.

4.  If you hold up all five fingers before you finish skimming, the book is too hard. Choose another.

Nightly Behavior Note & Reading Log

Thank you so much for diligently signing your child's Nightly Behavior Note. This is teaching your child responsibility in bringing their folder home each night and it is keeping us in communication about your child's behavior. I have been very pleased with the behavior of our students so far this year. Thank you for encouraging your child to make good behavior choices.

Starting this week, the form will look a little bit different. There will be a READING LOG on the back of the Behavior Note as well. Please record books titles, minutes read, and your signature. Research supports that when a child reads a book at their own level for 10-15 minutes each night, their ready skills will improve in several areas. Please let me know if your child does not have books at home to read. I can send home some of our classroom books for them to borrow.

Your child can also visit STARFALL.COM and RAZKIDS.COM. I will be sending home passwords this week.

PASTRIES FOR PARENTS Friday, Oct 10th

Bring your family for pastries on Friday, October 10, 2014! We will be serving pastries, milk, juice and coffee from 7:30 AM to 8:15 AM. The event takes place in the Washington School gym. See you on Friday!

FLUENCY

Perhaps you have heard your child tell you, "We are working on FLUENCY in Mrs. Applegate's classroom." when they are reading aloud to you. We have been discussing the importance of reading with Expression, a "just right rate", and "a just right volume" so far this year. Have your child demonstrate just what this means when they are reading aloud to you. We will also be focusing on Smoothness and Phrasing.

Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. In order to understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently. When reading aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add intonation appropriately. Their reading is smooth and has expression.

Children who do not read with fluency sound choppy and awkward. Those students may have difficulty with decoding skills or they may just need more practice with speed and smoothness in reading. Fluency is also important for motivation; children who find reading laborious tend not to want read! As readers head into upper elementary grades, fluency becomes increasingly important. The volume of reading required in the upper elementary years escalates dramatically. Students whose reading is slow or labored will have trouble meeting the reading demands of their grade level.

Seeds Take Time- Plant Unit

We just planted our own plants last week in 1A to kick off our PLANTS UNIT. We decided to plant Pansies. We will be recording data about our plants in our Plant Journals. This unit will tie into our Science Standards Based Report Cards. Science: Science as Inquiry Perceive compiled data as evidence Science: Earth and Space Science Articulate that the sun provides light and heat for Earth Science: Life Science Compare and contrast characteristics of plants Your child will be learning about the parts of plants and their functions. We will also learn what a plant needs to grow and the many uses of plants in our world. The kids are excited about this unit and we can't wait to see our flowers when they pop through the soil.
